3 Tips to Immediately Improve Your Bowling Score

Rolling a strike feels good, but knocking down every pin in one roll isn’t the only way you’ll walk off the lanes feeling like a champ. When you earn a high score game after game, you’re going to feel ready for a tournament. But it takes practice and a few tips. Try these three to improve your bowling score next time you play.

1) Know your stance.

You want to release the ball right at the foul line. So, start there and take five steps back; that’s where you should stand. Set your feet apart with your non-dominant foot slightly ahead of the other. Keep your knees bent and your stance balanced.

Hold the ball with your bowling grip and keep it out to the same side as your dominant hand. When ready, use your arm like a pendulum for a smooth stroke and a controlled delivery.

2) Pick the right ball.

Don’t grab the heaviest ball off the rack if it’s too much. On average, 14- to 15-pound balls work for men, and 11- to 12-pound balls work for women. But look for more than the right weight. Find a ball that offers a snug finger fit. The right ball has finger holes a bit larger than your ring size.

How you hold the ball depends on your delivery. If you approach the foul line like a cheetah, keep it waist level. If you’re slower like a turtle, you can keep the ball chest level to get a full swing.

3) Spares and strikes!

Quickly rack up your score with more spares and strikes. When rolling for spares, shoot straight. Every spare you nail is ten more points onto your game. But throwing a hook can be better for knocking down all ten pins in a single stroke. Aim for the head pin and give it a gentle hook.
